Arne Slot Insists He Is Secure and Retains Liverpool's Support After PSV Humiliation
Arne Slot conceded that it was understandable for doubts to be asked about his future following another heavy loss against PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool suffered their 9th defeat in 12 matches, marking the team's poorest run since being relegated in 1953-54.
They were dominated by the Eredivisie champions on a tough night at Anfield.
“I'm confident, things are alright, I have got a lot of backing from the top,” the coach commented.
“It would be great to change things and secure a win obviously but when you're working as a coach and struggling then it's expected that questions are asked.”
He added, “I'm comfortable with my position. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a tough spot but it's necessary that we improved our results.”
Discussions with Liverpool Hierarchy
When asked to elaborate on his conversations with the club's leadership, the head coach explained:
“We communicate frequently. They assist for the squad and for me and we have those conversations but they aren't calling me all the time of the day to say they back me.”
He further stated, “During our regular conversations we have I feel the confidence. However I haven’t spoken to them since this match yet so we'll see.”
Familiar Failings and Squad Response
Slot expressed regret over familiar shortcomings from his Liverpool side in their Champions League loss, specifically missed opportunities and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more forthright in his view of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the answers. Honestly, I don’t. I'm telling that to all,” Jones said.
“It’s just not good enough. I don’t even have to wait to think about it. I’m past getting mad internally. I've reached the stage now where I simply lack the phrases.”
He went on, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the team I support. I'm a supporter, and I've watched this club for years.”
“In recent memory, I've not seen a Liverpool team going through a period of this nature with outcomes like these.”
He concluded, “But we continue to wear the emblem on our chest. And as long as that badge is removed, we’re always going to compete.”
“We will attempt to help the side back to the top, demonstrate to all again the values of this club and why it's known as the top club in the world.”
“However currently, we’re in the shit and it needs to change.”
