A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the year.

The top bid for the 243kg fish was submitted by the parent firm of a nationwide sushi chain, which manages outlets across the country and overseas.

"The year's tuna heralds a prosperous start," stated the company president, a notable bidder at the traditional January sale.

Referred to as the King of Tuna, this industry figure is renowned for submitting substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious January auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Past

Following the auction, the winner informed journalists that he was "taken aback at the final price," noting, "I believed we would be able to acquire it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed in no time."

This latest purchase tops his own record purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Even after previously remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to break his own record another time.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically known for sky-high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a separate food company, which indicated the fish would be served at its eateries throughout the country.

The frenetic energy at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

From Auction to Plate

The extremely valuable tuna was shortly thereafter sliced up for diners at the winner's sushi establishments shortly after the auction ended.

"I believe like I've begun the year in a good way after eating something so lucky as the year gets underway," shared one elated customer.
