Far-Right Ex- Congressman J.A. Kast Chosen as Chile's Next Head of State.

Following a conclusive final ballot, far-right politician José Antonio Kast has won the presidential office in Chile.

A Resounding Win

After more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast won 58.17% of the votes, defeating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This represents Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having previously been lost by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.

Platform Built On Law and Order and Migration

Noted for his strong Catholic views and regard for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was primarily centered on promises to combat rising insecurity and radically reduce immigration.

He frequently pointed to immigrants, notably the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. Throughout the election cycle, he issued an ultimatum for them to exit before the inauguration or face deportation.

His proposals featured controversial measures such as constructing camps, border walls, perimeter fencing, and strengthening the military presence on the northern frontier.

Part of a Continental Trend

Many observers view Kast's success as aligning with a larger rightward trend in the region, similar to this year's electoral outcomes in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Yet, other analysts additionally view it as a part of the established swing of power between left and right governments since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.

Leading Without a Clear Majority

In spite of his decisive electoral triumph, Kast is not expected to have an overall majority in parliament, neither in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even when all right-leaning parties are counted together.

This political reality could complicate his plans, including a vow to reduce public spending by a significant sum within 18 months—a proposal for which he has not offered a clear explanation.

"We have numerous things about what a Kast administration will operate that are uncertain because he has not said his methods for implement them," noted a political expert.

The analyst added, "Regarding fiscal matters, it is almost certain we will see austerity policies associated with the right. But where there is considerably less doubt is on public safety, because that has been his workhorse across the campaign."
