In a recent interview, acclaimed actress Fiona Shaw opened up about her diverse career covering multiple decades and memorable characters.

Andor's Powerful Speech

While talking about her memorable eulogy scene in the Star Wars series Andor, Shaw disclosed that the original script contained more explicit wording. "I actually spoke a distinct term in my speech," she clarified, "and the writer wanted the studio would accept it."

The actress detailed the unusual shooting circumstances for this specific moment. "When I performed that speech, I was recorded with about 200 cameras for making a hologram. I was completely alone in a massive studio, with neither director nor crew members there with me."

Jane Austen Adaptations

Regarding the upcoming screen version of Jane Austen's classic novel, Shaw expressed excitement about finishing production. "We recently completed shooting it," she stated, "and what an actor typically doesn't see is the completed movie."

The actress commended director Georgia Oakley as "truly wonderful and very assured." The filming took place in beautiful estates throughout Britain, including sites within Dorset, Knebworth, and Devonshire.

Shaw also reflected on her previous role in the 1995 adaptation of Austen's Persuasion, playing Mrs. Croft. "The director had specific requirements: no wigs and just candle illumination," she remembered. "He truly aimed to recreate the feeling of early 19th century life."

In response to questions regarding her experience with the wizarding film series, Shaw talked warmly about collaborating with her departed co-star. "He represented the most refined, artistic and talented man," she revealed. "He had the most beautiful penmanship and on one occasion mailed me a note inviting me to lunch in ornate gothic script."

She described Griffiths as constantly speaking and sharing fascinating anecdotes with both her and the young actors on set. "He had fantastic general knowledge so we would sit enthralled by his tales."

Stage Performances

Talking about her Broadway performance in Medea, Shaw remembered how emotionally demanding the show was. "I encountered one of the ensemble actors several years after, who said: 'I'm not over it yet,'" she disclosed.

The production continued for years, beginning in Ireland, then traveling to England, followed by the American capital, the New York venue, and ultimately Manhattan. "We grew very close as a cast," she added.

When questioned about her ability to transition between humor and seriousness, Shaw explained that "humor unites people as it's about rupturing the norm." However, she admitted that "the night before a comedy, I always rest badly, because you have to catch the wave on the day."

Discussing her latest role in Hot Milk, Shaw characterized her character Rose as "a terrible woman though you cannot perform anything from that viewpoint." The actress elaborated that Rose experiences a nervous system condition that causes mobility issues.

"She is unaware of the impact she has on her daughter," Shaw observed. "Her only concern is that she desires to get better. She's well-intentioned yet unaware. Maybe this represents what many people resemble."

Upon hearing that viewers consider her ideal as authority figure characters, Shaw answered with humor: "Oh dear! I'm so not scary. But maybe when infused with intention, my features might seem threatening."

The actress continued: "In reality occasionally rather disorganized so perhaps it's therapeutic for me to play highly intellectual, organized characters. I try to portray interesting people so I avoid criticizing them. Please don't fear – approach and greet me!"

Passion for Words

Talking about her celebrated interpretation of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land, Shaw conveyed her deep connection with language and poetry. "I'm consistently devoted in the language," she stated, "because the clues to everything are contained within the choice of words."

Regarding her praised spoken-word performances, specifically Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Shaw shared that "I loved reading Alice in Wonderland because I incorporated all my acquaintances into it – personal companions and fellow performers."

Recalling her experience working with celebrated filmmaker Terrence Malick on Tree of Life, Shaw portrayed him as distinctive. "Everything Terrence Malick expresses and undertakes is different," she observed.

She shared a particular memory of their initial encounter: "He left a message on my answering machine which said, 'I wonder, would you come and help with my film?' We went out for breakfast. He said, 'Well, what are you going to have?' I said, 'I'm going to have scrambled eggs.' He said, 'I think I'll have scrambled eggs too,' like it was the most unusual selection in the world."

Shaw also mentioned Malick's unusual approach of asking actors "Would you prefer to do this scene indoors or outdoors?" – inquiries seldom made by different directors. "He exclusively used natural light," she continued, "so you could either perform inside by a window or exterior on location."

Regarding the lengthy post-production, Shaw revealed that "He takes approximately three years to complete the movie. I had been told by the producer following twenty-four months that I was probably one of the main characters, but when the film was released, I was mostly removed."
