Plans for Trump-Putin Summit Shelved Shortly After Hungarian Capital Negotiations Announced
There are "no arrangements" for American leader President Trump to meet Russian President Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has announced.
Last Thursday Trump stated he and the Russian president would meet in Hungary's capital soon to discuss the ongoing hostilities.
A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the White House said the two had had a "constructive" call and that a face-to-face session was no longer "needed".
The administration withheld further information on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.
Previous Developments
The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit over the phone with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.
Various sources indicated his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with sources indicating the president had urged him to give up significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Russia.
However, on Monday Trump supported a truce plan supported by Kyiv and EU officials to freeze the conflict on the existing battle lines.
"Leave it as is the way it is," he said.
Moscow has frequently resisted against pausing the existing front lines.
Moscow was solely focused on "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister stated on Tuesday, indicating that pausing conflict would merely represent a short-term truce.
Political Perspectives
The "fundamental issues" of the war demanded attention, Lavrov said, using Kremlin shorthand for a series of extensive requirements that encompass the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its European partners.
Zelensky stated talks regarding the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to evade negotiations.
He further commented the sole subject that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the supply of long-range weapons to Ukraine.
Military Considerations
Putin's unscheduled call with the US leader last Thursday occurred before speculation that the US was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit deep into Russia.
The Ukrainian leader stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had turned out to be a "valuable contribution" in diplomacy", he remarked.
